The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Knights of the Eastern Hockey League are proud to announce that defenseman Matt Passaretti has committed to play for the SUNY Canton Kangaroos (NCAA-DIII) next season.
Passaretti becomes the second EHL Knights player to make a collegiate commitment, with goaltender Thomas Walker set to join Albertus Magnus next season.
“When I went down for my visit I had great conversations with both coaches,” said Passaretti when asked about the decision. “They were at our Showcase and I talked to them a couple days before I finally made my decision. They really wanted me and that’s a great feeling.”
Prior to joining the Knights, the New York native spent time with the Rochester Monarchs of the USPHL. In his final year of Junior eligibility, Passaretti felt joining the Knights could help his exposure to schools and his chance to make a collegiate decision.
“Not just this team, but this league; the EHL. I know a lot of guys who left other places to come here so I followed in their footsteps. I heard a lot of great things about Coach Fusco and this organization so it was a no-brainer that I was going to come here and it definitely helped. I’m glad I came here.”
Alongside EHL Knights’ Captain Rhett Padgett, Passaretti has logged heavy minutes as one of the teams’ top defenders thus far in the 2018-19 season. EHL Head Coach Josh Fusco talks about the impact of his committed defenseman.
“Matt has been an outstanding addition to our organization,” said Fusco. He brings a lot to the table, from his work ethic, to his veteran leadership on the ice and in the locker room. He came here to elevate his game, improve his skill, and most importantly, having success and moving on to NCAA hockey.”
It didn’t hurt that Coach Fusco spent time with a person that played a key role in getting Passaretti to Canton.
“I have a good relationship with Vincent Pietrangelo (Assistant Coach for SUNY Canton). We played college hockey together at Finlandia University. It was a perfect match for both parties once I got Vincent to come see Matt play.”
So far, Passaretti has skated in all 19 games for Wilkes-Barre this season, registering four goals and 12 points. He leads all defenseman in points on Wilkes-Barre’s roster.
The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Knights congradulate Matt on his commitment, and look forward to his continued development throughout the season to prepare him for the jump to NCAA hockey.
