The Junior A Knights played against the New York Bobcats on January 21 for their annual “Support the Troops” game. The game turned out to be a great success except for the final score. The Knights wore specially designed Army jerseys designed by wounded veteran Earl Granville. There was also a color guard and a ceremonial puck drop.
The Knights lost the game 6-5, however they proved that they could play with the upper echelon teams. The Bobcats currently sit in third place in the AJHL with a 25-7-0-1 record. The Knights had mounted a two goal lead against the Bobcats in the third period, but special teams and defensive mishaps awarded the Bobcats with three unanswered goals.
The Knights did get some offense from role players. Gaven Lavalley and Pat Walsh each had a goal. All-star alternate Brian Hurlimann had a goal and an assist and Swedish born Erik Moberg had two goals. Rob Liberatore faced 40 shots against and allowed 6 goals, however the goals came off defensive breakdowns and special teams.
The Knights currently sit 3 points behind the New Jersey Rockets for the final playoff spot in the AJHL.
